I worked as a managing editor and gear reviewer for OudoorGearLab.com for around six years. This site won Outside Magazine‘s award for Top Gear Blog in 2011 when I was a core member of the team. As a managing editor, I hired and managed relationships with contractors, prioritized and managed projects, copy-edited content with special attention to SEO, and formatted content on to the website.
As lead author for the second edition of Supertopo’s High Sierra Climbing guidebook, published summer of 2013, I selected, researched, climbed, and drew topos for 15 new routes, wrote descriptions, updated original content, and coordinated with contributors. I then compiled all the details together by designing the layout of the book.
I was also the co-author and art director for Wolverine Publishing’s Bishop Bouldering Select guidebook, coming to shelves February 2016. I wrote sections of the book, designed the layout, and solicited image contributions from local photographers. We also published this guide as a Rakkup app, which is a unique way to use and carry a guidebook.
Writing and editing, like design, involve a close attention to detail and careful organization with emphasis on making content easy to understand. This is an aspect of both types of work that I love, and over time I have developed a unique skill set for clear and unique compilation of content, written or graphic.
