First of all, thanks for coming to my new site! This site is a true product of me: a fusion of my design portfolio, business services, and a blog cataloging my outdoor adventures and thoughts of being passionate in work and play.
I am a freelance graphic designer. I love it. It is the scariest, most rewarding project I have tackled in my adult life. However, in typical McKenzie style, I started freelancing when I was ready to leave my last job and excited to start my own thing, not when I was in a secure position to start a business. Since I launched Cardinal Innovative in February 2011, I have had some amazing strokes of luck, made some great contacts, and started working my way into a justifiable business.
I love the work I’m doing and I love working for myself, but unlike a steady full time job, it is always stressful wondering where the next job is going to come from. The real challenge is going to be figuring out how to keep this venture going and growing without breaking down, giving up, and getting a different full-time job.
When I first started working for myself my friend Rob Shaul, who runs Mountain Athlete, www.mtnathlete.com gave me some great small business advice: “Most small businesses don’t fail …. rather, the owners lose faith, and give up. Chin up and soldier on.”
This is where I am today: soldiering on, but excited. The launch of my website is a step in the right direction. Stay tuned to see how it goes.
